How long does it take to learn Spanish?

Guided hours per CEFR level

Cambridge English publishes a guided-learning-hours guideline: the approximate supervised study needed to reach each CEFR level from beginner. Spanish has no equivalent official table, so the calculator applies the Cambridge bands as a proxy — justified because the FSI's independent Spanish total (552–690 class hours to ILR 3, roughly C1) lands in the same band as the Cambridge C1 range (700–800 hours, which additionally counts supervised self-study). Every figure below is cumulative from zero.

What actually moves the timeline

Weekly hours beat total months

Two hours a week for a year (about 100 hours) barely reaches A1; ten hours a week for three months (about 120 hours) passes it comfortably. Forgetting between sessions is the tax that low-frequency study pays — the calculator's date projection assumes your weekly pace is sustained, so pick a pace you can hold for months, not weeks.

Guided hours are not Duolingo hours

The published figures count lessons plus supervised study — a teacher correcting you in real time. Passive app streaks and background podcast listening help, but they convert into CEFR progress far more slowly. If most of your hours are unguided, treat the calculator's upper bound as your planning number.

Immersion compresses the calendar, not the hours

Living in Mendoza does not change how many hours B2 requires — it changes how many hours fit in a week. Students in our immersion programs routinely log 15–25 guided hours weekly between classes, conversation practice and daily life, which is why a level that takes a year at home can take a season here.
