Learning French: where the difficulty actually sits

French is one of the most accessible languages for English speakers, and for an unusual reason: roughly a third of English vocabulary arrived from French after 1066. Words like government, justice, avenue and restaurant are already French. Reading builds far faster than most learners expect.

The difficulty is concentrated almost entirely in listening. French has vowels English does not use, nasal vowels, silent word endings, and liaison — the habit of running words together so that "les amis" comes out as a single sound. You can read a sentence fluently and fail to recognise it when spoken.

That gap is why every class is live. Listening comprehension is the slowest skill to develop in French and the one a recorded course cannot train. It needs a native speaker talking at real speed and correcting you in the moment.

PRONUNCIATION

Why written and spoken French feel like two languages

French uses the Latin alphabet, so reading starts immediately. Speaking — and above all understanding — is where the work is. These are the phenomena that separate the text from the sound, and we address all of them from level A1.

The six pronunciation obstacles

  • u — no English equivalent: say "ee" with your lips rounded for "oo"
  • eu — a rounded mid vowel, roughly between "uh" and "er"
  • on / an / in — nasal vowels; air goes through the nose and the n is not sounded
  • -ent — a completely silent verb ending: "parlent" sounds like "parl"
  • liaison — silent consonants revive before a vowel: "les amis" → "lezami"
  • r — guttural, produced at the back of the throat, never rolled

Every class follows a clear structure: brief review, new content, guided speaking practice, then free conversation. In French we add a dedicated listening block, because comprehension is the slowest skill to develop and the one that decides your result in any exam.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn French?▼
The US Foreign Service Institute places French in its easiest category for English speakers, at roughly 600 to 750 class hours to professional working proficiency. With one-hour classes two or three times a week, most students reach a solid A2 in four to six months and B2 — the level universities and immigration programmes ask for — in around two years.
Do you prepare students for DELF and DALF?▼
Yes. DELF covers levels A1 to B2 and DALF covers C1 and C2. Both are official certifications from the French Ministry of Education and they never expire. We work each test format, all four assessed skills, and section-specific strategy, with mock papers before your date.
Can you prepare me for the French exam for Canadian immigration?▼
Yes. Canadian immigration processes accept French exams such as TEF and TCF, and French scores heavily — particularly in Quebec's programmes. We prepare those specific formats and build the plan around your exam date and the level you need to certify.
I can read French but I can't understand people speaking. Is that normal?▼
It is the single most common complaint and it has a concrete cause: liaison, nasal vowels and silent endings mean the spoken chain does not resemble the written text. It is fixed with systematic listening training and explicit phonetic work, which we include as a fixed block at every level.
Are the classes one-to-one or in a group?▼
We offer both. One-to-one classes let you move faster and shape the syllabus around your objective, and they are the better choice if you have an exam date. Groups are capped at four people, cost less, and give you more listening and peer-interaction practice.
Do you teach French from France or Quebec?▼
The course is based on standard French, which is what every official exam assesses, including TEF and TCF. If your goal is Quebec, we add dedicated work on understanding the accent and Quebec vocabulary, particularly from B1 upwards.
I studied French at school years ago. Where do I start?▼
With an assessment, not with the alphabet. School French usually leaves people with better reading than listening and far better recognition than production. We measure that gap in the trial lesson and build the plan around it, so you are not repeating material you already half-know.
Do you issue a certificate?▼
Yes. On completing each level you can request an attendance and level certificate issued by Go Fluent Academy. It does not replace official certifications such as DELF or DALF, but it serves as formal evidence of your progress for employers or institutions.
What time zones do you teach in?▼
We are based in Argentina and teach students across the Americas, Europe and beyond. Scheduling is agreed when we build your plan — we confirm availability in your time zone before you commit to anything.
