ABOUT THE LANGUAGE
Learning Italian: where the difficulty actually sits
Italian is one of the more forgiving languages for an English speaker to start. It is almost perfectly phonetic — once you know the rules, you can read any word aloud correctly on sight, which is not true of English or French. And a large share of formal English vocabulary traces back to Latin, so words like necessario, possibile and importante cost you nothing.
The difficulty is not in reading or vocabulary. It is in the things English simply does not have: every noun carries a gender that adjectives and articles must agree with, verbs change ending for every person and tense, and the subjunctive is in everyday use rather than being a formal relic. Double consonants also carry meaning — casa and cassa are different words.
That is why lessons are 1-to-1. Gender agreement and verb endings are exactly the kind of thing that gets silently wrong and then hardens into habit. A teacher listening to you speak catches it in the moment; a course app does not.
PRONUNCIATION
What English speakers have to unlearn
Italian uses the Latin alphabet and is read exactly as written, so there is no spelling barrier. The obstacles are few but constant, and they are what mark out a non-native speaker.
The six friction points
- doppie — double consonants are held longer and change meaning: nono (ninth) vs nonno (grandfather)
- gli — a sound with no English equivalent; not "glee", articulated with the tongue against the palate
- gn — like the ny in canyon, but far more frequent: ogni, bagno, insegnante
- r — tapped or rolled, never the English approximant — this is the single biggest giveaway
- vowels — five pure vowels with no diphthongisation; English speakers tend to glide them
- stress — mobile word stress that is not marked in writing and has to be learned with the word

Certified Italian at B1 level is required for citizenship by marriage, and language requirements have widened in recent years. We prepare specifically for CELI and PLIDA B1. Always confirm the current requirements with your consulate before booking an exam.

Absolute beginners
If you have never studied Italian, the phonetic spelling and Latin-derived vocabulary make the first months faster than most languages. A few months of regular lessons gets you to a solid A2.
