Learning Portuguese: what actually makes it hard

Portuguese is one of the more accessible languages for English speakers — the US Foreign Service Institute places it in its easiest category, at roughly 600 to 750 hours to working proficiency. The grammar is systematic, the vocabulary shares a large Latin base with English, and reading comes quickly.

The difficulty is almost entirely in the sound. Portuguese has nasal vowels that don't exist in English, a set of vowel reductions that make spoken European Portuguese sound nothing like the written word, and a rhythm that resists being read off the page. Learners who study alone consistently plateau here.

That is why every one of our classes is live. Pronunciation is the one part of Portuguese that cannot be self-taught from an app — it needs a native ear correcting you in real time, from the first week rather than the second year.

PRONUNCIATION

The sounds that make Portuguese Portuguese

Portuguese uses the Latin alphabet, so reading is immediate. Speaking is where the work is. These are the sounds English speakers have to build from scratch — we introduce all of them in the first few lessons rather than letting bad habits set in.

Sounds to build from scratch

  • ão — nasal diphthong, as in "não" — no English equivalent
  • ã / õ — nasal vowels; the air goes through the nose, not the mouth
  • lh — like the "lli" in "million", as one fused sound
  • nh — like the "ny" in "canyon", again as one sound
  • r / rr — guttural in Brazil, closer to an English "h" than an "r"
  • de / te — in Brazil, softened to "dgee" and "chee" before an i sound

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn Portuguese?▼
The US Foreign Service Institute places Portuguese in its easiest category for English speakers, at roughly 600 to 750 class hours to professional working proficiency. In practice, with one-hour classes two or three times a week, most students reach a solid A2 in four to six months and a conversational B1 within a year. C1 is a multi-year commitment.
Do you teach Brazilian or European Portuguese?▼
Both, with native teachers of each variety. You choose based on your goal — business and work with Brazil, or relocation and paperwork in Portugal. The differences in pronunciation and vocabulary are real, so we teach the variety you will actually use rather than a neutral blend.
Are the classes one-to-one or in a group?▼
We offer both. One-to-one classes let you move faster and shape the whole syllabus around your objective. Groups are capped at four people, cost less, and give you more listening and peer-interaction practice.
I already speak Spanish. Does that help?▼
Enormously — Spanish and Portuguese share close to 90% of written vocabulary. It also creates a specific risk called portunhol, where you fill gaps with Spanish and stop improving. If you speak Spanish we adjust the plan to attack false friends and pronunciation early, before those habits set.
What if I'm a complete beginner?▼
That is the most common starting point. A1 is designed for absolute beginners with no prior exposure. You will spend the first classes on pronunciation and core structures, and you will be producing simple spoken Portuguese within the first few weeks.
Can you prepare me for CELPE-Bras?▼
Yes. CELPE-Bras is the official Brazilian Portuguese certification, required by Brazilian universities and used in several immigration processes. We work the exam structure and the communicative tasks it assesses within a plan built around your exam date.
What time zones do you teach in?▼
We are based in Argentina and teach students across the Americas, Europe and beyond. Scheduling is agreed when we build your plan — we confirm availability in your time zone before you commit to anything.
Do you issue a certificate?▼
Yes. On completing each level you can request an attendance and level certificate issued by Go Fluent Academy. It does not replace official certifications such as CELPE-Bras, but it serves as formal evidence of your progress for employers.
What happens in the free trial lesson?▼
It is a real class, not a sales call. We assess your current level — including the gap between what you understand and what you can produce — talk through your goal, and you get a sense of the teacher and the format before deciding anything.
