How to study this table

The big 6 first

Be, have, go, get, take and make appear in almost every sentence. Each has its own page with usage notes and typical learner errors.

Then by pattern

The i-a-u group (sing-sang-sung) is memorized by singing; the -ought group (buy-bought, think-thought) is learned together; the same-3 group (cut-cut-cut) is a gift. Use the filters above to study one pattern at a time.

The participle rules the perfect

The costliest error is using the past where the participle goes: 'I have went' for 'I have gone'. When in doubt, the table shows both columns side by side.

be, have, go, get, take, make

Frequently asked

What are the 20 most common irregular verbs?
Be, have, do, go, get, make, take, see, come, give, eat, drink, sleep, read, write, speak, buy, say, pay and meet. Those 20 cover most daily sentences — marked A1 in the table, memorize them first.
Is there a list of 100 irregular verbs with meanings?
Yes: this page holds 104 verbs with past simple, participle and glosses, plus search by word, pattern filter and letter tabs.
How to memorize irregular verbs fast?
By pattern, not alphabetically: first the i-a-u group (sing-sang-sung), then past-equals-participle (-ought, -t), then the same-3 group.
Past vs participle: what is the difference?
The past stands alone ('I went'); the participle needs have/be ('I have gone', 'was written'). Mixing them is the most common learner error.
