ABOUT THE LANGUAGE
Turkish for beginners: where to start
Turkish is an agglutinative language — instead of separate prepositions and articles, meanings are added to the word root as suffixes. That sounds unfamiliar at first, but it follows an extremely consistent logic: once you learn the suffix rules, you can construct thousands of new sentences without memorizing each word individually.
For English speakers, the biggest adjustment is not vocabulary or pronunciation (Turkish is fully phonetic) — it is getting used to Subject–Object–Verb word order, where the verb comes at the end of the sentence. Live lessons with a native tutor let you correct these habits in real time, which is what accelerates progress most in the first months.
Turkish is spoken by over 80 million people, is the official language of Turkey and co-official in Cyprus, and has growing global reach through Turkish cinema, television, and business. Many learners start wanting to understand dizi (Turkish TV dramas) without subtitles and end up reaching genuine conversational fluency.
PRONUNCIATION
From the Turkish alphabet to real conversation
Modern Turkish uses the Latin alphabet with 29 letters — the standard 26 plus six special characters. It is 100% phonetic: every letter always sounds the same, with no exceptions. Most learners can read Turkish text aloud correctly within their first two lessons.
Turkish special characters
- ç — pronounced "ch" (as in "chair")
- ğ — soft "g", lengthens the previous vowel
- ı — a central unrounded vowel (like a muffled "uh")
- ö — like the German "ö" or French "eu"
- ş — pronounced "sh" (as in "ship")
- ü — like the German "ü" or French "u"
Why Turkish is learnable
- No grammatical gender in nouns — no masculine/feminine to memorize
- No articles (no 'the', 'a', 'an' equivalents)
- Phonetic alphabet — reads exactly as written
- Very regular verb conjugation system
- Vowel harmony: one rule covers thousands of suffix forms
- Consistent word order: Subject–Object–Verb

FORMAT
How online Turkish lessons work
All lessons are live via video call — not pre-recorded videos or automated exercises. You get a real lesson with a native Turkish speaker who adapts explanations to how you already think in English, which removes a lot of the guesswork about why something works the way it does.
Each lesson follows a clear structure: brief recap, new content, guided speaking practice, and a free conversation block. Speaking time is maximized — learning Turkish requires using it, not just listening. After each lesson you receive notes and vocabulary to review.
Lesson formats
- 1-on-1Individual lessons at your pace and focus. Best for specific goals or flexible schedules.
- Group2–4 people, better value and more listening practice. Great for friends or colleagues starting together.
